Discussion to explore Middle Eastern dance as an art form

Vinton County author Penni AlZayer has long been a student of the varied and fascinating dance traditions of the Middle East and North Africa-areas that are home to some of the oldest and richest civilizations in the world. She will discuss her study of the subject and share personal observations and experiences gained during 13 years of living in that region on April 21 as part of Remembering Community: A Spring Literary Arts Festival in McArthur, Ohio.

AlZayer will talk about the importance of dance not only as an art form, but as significant communal activity that crosses generations and genders. She will also discuss dance as a vehicle for cross-cultural understanding and communication. Her presentation will include student demonstrations of several styles of Middle Eastern dance.

AlZayer characterizes herself as a lifelong dabbler in the arts. Prior to being commissioned to write Middle Eastern Dance, she has been a student and a teacher of music, visual arts and crafts, music, dance and theater-both at home and abroad.

Remembering Community: A Spring Literary Arts Festival is sponsored by the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library and the Friends of the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library, Inc., in McArthur, Ohio. The festival opens at noon on Friday, April 21, 2006 and the last event will commence at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2006. All events are free and open to the public; however, advance registration is requested. For more information and to register, contact the library at 740-596-5691 or www.vintoncountypublic.lib.oh.us.
