Ivan M. Tribe, Ph.D. to offer country music presentation at literary arts festival

Organizers of the 2006 Spring Literary Arts Festival at the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library in McArthur did not have to look far to find experts about traditional Appalachian music and Vinton County culture. They simply looked down the street to the home of historian Ivan Tribe, Ph.D., and his wife, Deanna.

Dr. Tribe is a Professor of History at the University of Rio Grande while Deanna is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist at the Ohio State University Extension Center at Piketon. Their presentations are sure to enlighten audiences of Remembering Community: A Spring Literary Arts Festival.

On April 22, Deanna will offer a guided tour of Vinton County that will highlight the culture, history, traditions and rural folkways of the people who call this area home. The tour is designed as an enjoyable educational experience for the local resident and visitor alike.

Later that evening, Ivan will deliver "Reflections of a Hillbilly Historian: Legitimizing the Musical Culture of Plain Folk." The presentation will survey the process of research and publishing related to the subject. Some recorded musical selections will accompany the presentation.

A native of Appalachian Ohio, Deanna holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Ohio University. She has been with OSU Extension for 30 years, starting as a county agent and serving in her current capacity since 1995.

Deanna has twice chaired Ohio's Appalachian Task Force and currently chairs Ohio's Hill Country Heritage Area. In Vinton County, she was instrumental in the development of the Vinton County Wild Turkey Festival and the Vinton County Chamber of Commerce.

Ivan holds degrees from Ohio University and the University of Toledo. He is the author of numerous publications relating to country music and musicians. Among his books are Mountaineer Jamboree: Country Music in West Virginia, The Stonemans: An Appalachian Family and the Music That Shaped Their Lives, and Country: A Regional Exploration (scheduled for release this year).

Together, this couple produces and hosts a weekly country music educational radio program on Ohio University Public Radio, a volunteer effort since 1983.

Remembering Community: A Spring Literary Arts Festival is sponsored by the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library and the Friends of the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library, Inc., in McArthur, Ohio. The festival opens at noon on Friday, April 21, 2006 and the last event will commence at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2006.
