Description
This half-day workshop is designed to allow participants to become
familiar with communication strategies to effectively interact with
people who have disabilities. You will acquire an understanding of
language "do's" and "don't's" when interacting with or talking about
people who have disabilities and gain knowledge about inclusion and its
benefits to everyone. In addition, we will work toward an increased
sense of confidence and comfort in connecting with people who have
disabilities and gain experience with a variety of accommodation tools,
materials, and strategies to welcome patrons who have disabilities to
access services or attend events.
This workshop will be divided into two sections:
Putting People First
A videotape to stimulate facilitated discussion on communication and
comfort with people who have disabilities
Strategies to Welcome and Accommodate People with Disabilities
Opportunities to learn about and practice with some of the accommodation
equipment and materials. Including a short video about basic physical
access and some firsthand experiences.
