If the Gilded Age makes you think of corrupt politicians and greedy
industrialists, we invite you to polish your thinking and sharpen your
critical skills while you explore the complexities of this era in American
history. In our weeklong workshop for community college faculty entitled
"Untarnishing the Gilded Age: American Politics and Culture, 1870-1901" you
will engage in discussions with renowned Gilded Age scholars while you
discover the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, a true landmark of
American History.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary, the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential
Center is the first presidential museum, library and home in the nation. The
Center is dedicated to educating the public about the Gilded Age, and
President Hayes' role during that era. Located in Fremont, Ohio; the Hayes
Presidential Center has vast holdings of Gilded Age manuscripts, books and
artifacts. The Hayes Presidential Center offers a wonderful location to
examine the pressing social, political and economic issues of the Gilded
Age.

"Untarnishing the Gilded Age: American Politics and Culture, 1870-1901" is
presented as part of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities
Landmarks of American History and Culture program. The workshops are open to
full and part-time community college instructors in any field but will be
most valuable to instructors in the humanities and social sciences. Each
workshop begins Monday morning at 9 a.m. and ends Friday afternoon. There
are two workshops to choose from: May 15-19 and May 22-26, 2006.

Participants will receive a $500 stipend to cover the cost of food, lodging
and travel (additional travel funds may be available on a case by case
basis). Each participant will develop either materials to achieve their
classroom objectives or begin a paper suitable for publication based on what
they learn in the workshop. Participants will have access to original
manuscripts and writings as well as some artifacts from the era in which to
develop their curriculum or paper.

Applications must be postmarked by March 15, 2006. Selected participants
will be notified by April 5, 2006. Detailed program information and
application materials are available online at www.rbhayes.org/ under
"Untarnishing the Gilded Age". If you have additional questions please do
not hesitate to email or call me.
