ACLU backs attorney fighting state Patriot Act

Columbus -- Government might as well ask vendors if they are communists,
for all the good it does to force them to proclaim on a form that they
are not terrorists, the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio told the
Ohio Supreme Court.

In an April lawsuit, the ACLU challenged the state's controversial new
Patriot Act, which requires vendors to sign forms attesting that they
are not terrorists. Last Friday, it filed legal arguments with justices
on behalf of attorney Marc Triplett, who refused to sign a form after
the Bellefontaine Municipal Court appointed him as a public defender.

Because he won't answer the six questions asking if he supports
terrorism, he has been disqualified to act as a defense attorney. The
ACLU compared the situation to the infamous "communist witch hunt" of
the 1950s in its arguments.
