Dear Colleagues,

You are invited!

Ada Kent, librarian at the Ohio School for the Deaf, has asked me to
send this invitation along. On Saturday, March 25th, a special training
will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in the Ohio School for the
Deaf Library, for Summer Reading Mentors. Public librarians are welcome
and encouraged to attend as observers and to learn about the program.

OSD has grant funds to train reading mentors for deaf and hard of
hearing students. The students served will be elementary students
through grade 6.

The program will run July 10 through August 11, 2006, two evenings a
week. Mentoring will happen at a public library near where the student
and mentor live. Each mentor will help a student read a book for 20-30
minutes per session. Students will take a comprehension quiz on the
computer when finished reading each book. Mentors help students learn
new vocabulary words and understand written English. Each mentor will
work with the same 2-3 students each week.

This is a pilot program to determine whether deaf and hard of hearing
students can benefit from reading during the summer. If the program is
successful, we anticipate offering the program next summer and beyond.

Public librarians who would like to attend the March 25th workshop would
attend free of charge and would eat lunch as the guest of OSD. The Ohio
School for the Deaf is located at 500 Morse Road in Columbus, near the
Morse Road exit of I-71.

For more information or to RSVP, please contact Ada Kent at
Kent at osd.oh.gov.

Sincerely,
Janet
