Speaker(s)
Peggy Johnson is Associate University Librarian for Access Services at
the University of Minnesota. Her responsibilities include technical
services, facilities and operations, and circulation, ILL, and stacks
maintenance. Johnson's MLS is from the University of Chicago and she has
an Masters in Management from Metropolitan [Minnesota] State University.
She began her career as a music cataloger, worked in the corporate
sector, and has also been a children's librarian. During her more than
twenty-five years at the University of Minnesota, her responsibilities
have focused on collection development, technical services,
institutional planning, grants management, and budgeting. She is a
frequently invited speaker and the author of several books and journal
articles. Johnson has consulted on library development in Uganda,
Rwanda, Morocco, and China. Her research interests are organizational
change and collection development and management. She served as
president of the Association for Library Collections and Technical
Services during 1999/2000. She currently edits two journals, Library
Resources & Technical Services and Technicalities. Her book,
Fundamentals of Collection Development and Management, received the 2004
Blackwell's Scholarship Award for an outstanding monograph or article in
the field of acquisitions, collection development, and related areas of
resources development in libraries.
Description
This is a *Basics* workshop that will introduce participants to the
responsibilities that make up collection development and management.
Effective collection development and management is a collaborative
process, therefore the workshop will combine interactive presentations
with group activities.
Topics to be addressed include:
--Understanding collection development and management as a practice and
an art
--Policy, planning, and fiscal management
--Selection: tools, techniques, criteria, and the selector's knowledge base
--Managing collections: decisions about withdrawals, transfers, journal
cancellation, preservation
--Marketing, outreach, community assessment, and liaison activities
--Collection assessment and evaluation
--Cooperative collection development and management
The impact of automation and electronic content on the practice of
collection development will be woven through the workshop.
Meal
Continental Breakfast will be served both days. Lunch is on your own. A
list of area restaurants will be provided.
