Intermediate Cataloging: LCSH and AACR2
<http://www.swonlibraries.org/viewevent?id=750>
Come to this cataloging session for an overview of two divergent areas
of cataloging, subject and descriptive. Subject cataloging, or providing
access to the subject content of a work, is considered an art, rather
than a science. Subject searches are the most frequent search conducted
by users and the most frustrating search to attempt. Descriptive
cataloging, on the other hand, is a meticulous process guided by AACR2
and its many rules. These two sessions will help participants gain a
conceptual understanding of both processes and their respective roles in
the library catalog.

Speaker
Carol Bradsher is a library consultant with over twenty years of
experience in libraries. She has designed and presented training
sessions for the Ohio Library Council, Ohio regional library systems,
the State Library of West Virginia, the Kentucky Dept. of Libraries and
Archives, and also developed the successful "Guerilla cataloging" series
for INFOhio. In addition to her cataloging and training experience, she
also worked as a consultant for OPLIN to implement MORE, the Ohio
statewide resource-sharing program.
Participants in Ms. Bradsher's training sessions frequently cite her
sense of humor and her ability to explain cataloging concepts in simple
terms, but her favorite workshop evaluation comment is, "Very
effective-- first time I attended a MARC workshop and didn't fall
asleep," which she considers high praise indeed.
Description
The morning session will provide an overview of subject cataloging,
including subject analysis, the Library of Congress subject cataloging
principles, and subject authority records. Participants will learn how
to identify the subject content of an item, determine appropriate
subject headings, and interpret a subject authority record. After lunch,
the focus will switch to descriptive cataloging and identifying basic
bibliographic information for books. Participants will learn the eight
elements that comprise a bibliographic description and complete a series
of exercises that strengthen their bibliographic muscles, especially in
the areas of identifying publishers, publication dates, and statements
of responsibility.
Meal
Continental breakfast will be provided; lunch is on your own in the area
