Jeff Greek has proposed one plan to promote Early Childhood Literacy and Fund Public Libraries
Columbus, OH, April 5, 2007: Jeff Greek, candidate for appointment to Columbus City Council, has presented a plan that will use city facilities to promote Early Childhood Literacy. This plan will also help fund the acquisition of new materials for public libraries that serve the city. More details are on the campaign web site:

COLUMBUS READS
Every year, public libraries in Columbus throw out thousands of books. These discarded books have been read many times by visitors to the library but they have become out of date, slightly used and are taking up shelf space needed for newer, more popular books.
A regular event at libraries is the book sale where these books are sold, usually for $1.00 each. More often than not, there are many hundreds, perhaps thousands of books left over after each sale. These are the ones that might get thrown out.
Greek proposes that the city buy all of these unsold discarded books from the libraries for a small price and then GIVE AWAY THE CHILDREN¢S BOOKS at City Recreation Centers. GIVE AWAY all the other books, too.
The libraries make a little money to buy more materials. The city spends a little money to help put a book in every home and promote literacy. The CHILDREN of less fortunate families come to City Recreation Centers to help make their minds as strong as their bodies.
Columbus becomes a stronger, better educated, more literate city that people will want to move TO, not away FROM.
If this is successful, other cities might also be interested!
