Preservation Issues and Practices: Keeping Your Collections Healthy
<http://www.swonlibraries.org/viewevent?id=1006>
Library collections are vast and costly. We continue to purchase
traditional print and paper materials including books, magazines and
photographs, but we also collect all types of audiovisual materials
including CDs and DVDs and computer games. Non-print collections
deteriorate more quickly than print and are more difficult to preserve.
There are many ways to help your collections last longer, even in busy
public libraries. Controlling the environment, cleaning the collections,
controlling the light and separating the 'coffee café' from the library
are only a few things you can do. Learn how to care for and handle
circulating and reference collections. Understand the special options
for maintaining your special and local history collections. Part of this
workshop will discuss the care of non-print collections.
Goals:
· Learn how materials in your collections are constructed
· Identify factors that cause collections to fall apart
· Damage - how is it caused and how to prevent it
· Selecting appropriate repair techniques and supplies
· Low cost solutions to increase the life span of collections
· Review technological solutions for access, including CD-ROM, Optical
discs and magnetic media; their advantages and disadvantages.
· Learn about long-term "archival" storage and retention of electronic
and magnetic formats.
