Program Date: 04/26/2007

Program Time: 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Speaker:
William J. Rothwell, Ph.D., SPHR, is Professor-in-Charge of Workforce
Education and Development on the University Park campus of The
Pennsylvania State University. He is also President of Rothwell and
Associates, inc. (see www.rothwell-associates.com), a full-service
consulting firm that offers services in Succession Planning and
Management.

Program Description:
The U.S.--and, indeed, the world--is facing a possible tidal wave of
retirements as the Baby Boom generation nears retirement age. The
possibility of losing so many talented people at or near the same time
has prompted discussions of a pending Talent War among corporations,
government agencies, and nonprofit organizations that will soon compete
for a dwindling number of talented people in the smaller Baby Bust
generation. Some Bureau of Labor Statistics economists have even offered
dire predictions that the loss of so many people could prompt a global
recession.

Is your library ready for this? Do you know what to do and where to
start to prepare for the loss of many experienced librarians at or about
the same time?

Upon completing this morning session, participants will be able to:

*	Understand why a crisis will soon exist based on demographic
change in the U.S. and in many other countries
*	Know "what to do" and "where to start" in preparing for the loss
of experienced librarians
*	Compare practices in their libraries to best practices
*	Define succession planning and management and distinguish it
from traditional replacement planning
*	Discuss the steps in a comprehensive model of succession
planning and management
*	Review alternatives to succession planning and management to
meet staffing needs and work requirements

In the afternoon we will discuss how many organizational leaders
continue to worry about the potential loss of proprietary or unique
institutional memory as retirement looms for experienced librarians and
specialists. That concern translates into bottom-line issues for
organizations that rely on technical expertise for competitive
advantage.

More than talent management, technical succession planning is about
identifying key work processes, finding the key people who possess
special knowledge of those work processes, and capturing, distilling and
transmitting that special knowledge to replacements over time.

This session provides a practical approach to addressing an
organization's needs for technical succession planning.
Upon completing this Afternoon session, participants will be able to:

*	Define technical succession planning
*	Distinguish technical succession planning from management
succession planning
*	Describe a model to guide the launch of a technical succession
planning program and distinguish it from a model to guide the launch of
a management succession planning program
*	Review your organization's practices to best practices in
technical succession planning
*	Apply a step-by-step model to capture institutional memory,
distill it, and make it available in real time to next-generation
replacements
