[OPLINLIST] Clarification of HomeworkNow service for 2007-2008

Hello all,

 

There has been some confusion in the Ohio library community regarding the
future of HomeworkNow, as folks have read the official announcements
regarding the KnowItNow virtual reference services suite and then have seen
the advertising materials sent to individual libraries by the company
Tutor.com, which may seemingly contradict one another.  

 

Please rest assured that HomeworkNow is not going away in the next budget
year.  The only thing that will be discontinued after the current contract
runs out with Tutor.com is the "Live Homework Help" feature.  That means
that the librarians staffing HomeworkNow will not be able to transfer
students to the online tutors at Tutor.com.  However, it should be noted
that less than 15% (in fact, newer calculations place this number closer to
8%) of all HomeworkNow calls have ever been transferred to a tutor.
Tutor.com will no longer allow referring calls to tutors, in hopes that
individual libraries will subscribe to direct access; as a result, this had
to be dropped.  The adept librarians staffing HomeworkNow will continue to
service Ohio's students just as they always have.
