This is the Eighteenth year for Ohio's popular Youth Services Symposium. The
theme this year is "It's Not All Dr. Seuss! Reaching Beginning Readers
Kindergarten Grade 3." This two-day conference, to be held May 9 & 10 at
Deer Creek Resort in Mt. Sterling, and May 10 & 11 at Saw Mill Creek Resort
in Huron, will focus on those children who are learning to read and the
various levels of books to recommend to parents and children, depending on
reading levels. Keynote presenter will be Herman Parish, author of the
Amelia Bedelia readers. Also to be presented are literacy connections and
gains for children from the use of music. Jim Gill will be presenting at
Deer Creek and Don Monopoli, from the Learning Station, will entertain at Saw
Mill Creek. Penny Neef, youth services coordinator at West Bloomfield
Township Public Library, will discuss what books and skills are needed at
each level of the reading acquisition process and how your library can
partner with parents and schools to support beginning readers by maintaining
a collection of "just right" books for each level. In addition add the
"Wow!" factor to your story presentations with handmade tales. Author and
award-winning storyteller Dianne de Las Casas coaches participants on
creating innovative string stories, cut and tell, draw and tell, and fold
and tell tales. This conference is sponsored by the four regional library
systems in the state of Ohio and is supported by an LSTA Grant, funded by
the State Library of Ohio.

Registration is $120.00 for both days plus the cost of the hotel room. Hotel
reservations must be made directly with the resorts.
