Continuing Education Opportunities

Never Fear: Online Learning Resources from the State Library of Ohio and
SERLS.

This short demonstration will show you just how easy and effective online
training can be. Attend this short informal session to learn how to use
WebEx, the newest tool utilized by the State Library of Ohio and SERLS to
help professional librarians fulfill their continuing education needs
without leaving their library! This workshop is free of charge, and will be
held at convenient locations throughout southeast Ohio.

May 22: 9:00- 11:00 AM- Nelsonville Public Library, Nelsonville

May 22: 1:30- 3:30 PM- Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library, Northside
Branch, Chillicothe.

Internet Tools and Resources

Join Dr. Froehlich, Kent State University Professor, as he provides an
overview of the latest major internet tools and resources. Some of the
topics covered in this workshop will include evaluating informational
websites, using search engines and meta-search engines effectively, how to
find and use subject directories, and how to use Web 2.0 resources such as
blogs, wikis and social tagging. Free to enhanced SERLS members, $60 for all
other library staff.

May 23: 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM- SERLS, Wellston

May 24: 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM- State Library of Ohio, Columbus

10 to 4 Reference

The title says it all. A day long class, designed for new library staff,
eager to serve but without any formal training in the basics of reference
service. This course covers basic customer service and reference behavior
skills. Combine that with hands on practice and review of essential print
reference resources and a review of several core OPLIN databases.
Everything a new staff person needs...or a veteran wanting a good review.
Free of Charge

May 30: 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM- Guernsey County District Public Library
Crossroads Branch, Cambridge

Preservation Issues and Practices: Basic Care and Handling

Do your books fall apart after a few circulations? Do they continue to fall
apart after they are repaired? Summer can be rough on books, especially
popular titles that are in constant circulation. Join Miriam Kahn of MBK
Consulting as she teaches participants how to handle and care for the
circulating and reference collections found in cultural institutions, so
they last longer and look better. At the end of the session, each
participant will get hands- on training using the basic materials needed for
book repair.

Free to enhanced SERLS members, $60 for all other library staff.
Registration Closes May 23rd!

June 21: 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM- SERLS, Wellston

June 22: 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM- John McIntire Library, Zanesville.
