*Penny Pensak*, Senior Consultant with Smith Beers Yunker & Company,

to avoid.
Ms. Pensak is the Vice President of both Adath Israel Synagogue and the
American Jewish Committee. She is a state board member of Ohio Jewish
Communities and national secretary for Home Instruction for Parents of
Preschool Youngsters and a national Vice President of the National
Council of Jewish Women. Ms. Pensak has been a grassroots director for
the Children's Defense Fund and HIPPY Director for the YWCA. She also
serves on the boards of several community organizations. She was a 2004
Enquirer Woman of the Year.
Description
Development Directors are often hired with high expectations and
frequently with a job description worthy of a master juggler. When you
add in lofty (and often untested) goals, lack of infrastructure, and
perhaps basic misconceptions of the role of a development professional,
non-profits may be setting themselves up for major disappointments.
Understanding and respect of what a development director can and should
do can go a long way to ensuring a positive experience for the
organization, the board, the executive director, and the development
professional.
Donor-centered, volunteer focused development programs are encouraged,
but what does that mean? How do you identify the right person for your
organization? How do you measure success? Can you afford a development
professional? Can you afford to go without one any longer?
