Speakers:
Kristie Kirkpatrick is the director of Whitman County Rural Library
System (WCL) in southeastern Washington State. Working for WCL for
twenty years, Kirkpatrick served in nearly every staff position from
circulation, reference and public services to storytime, cataloging and
computer systems administration.

Under Kirkpatrick's leadership as Director, WCL won the Sustainability
Award from Webjunction as "The Little Library That Could" and has been
featured in ALA's Real Success Stories. Washington State Library called
WCL the best rural library in the State nominating them as one of the
top 100 libraries in the USA. Bill Gates visited WCL in 2002 citing the
library's innovative approach. WCL's programs and staff have been
featured in local, statewide and national workshops, broadcasts and
publications.

Susan Hill Pieper, Director of the Paulding County Carnegie Library, has
been the editor of the Rural Library Services Newsletter since 1991.
This publication is the only one of its kind devoted to the trends,
challenges and issues facing those working in smaller and rural public
libraries.

Program Description:
In the morning learn about the "Little Library that Could." Join your
colleagues for a networking lunch and after lunch gain valuable
information about dynamic partnerships. Finish off the day with a
brainstorming session on future continuing education for small
libraries.

The Little Library That Could:

Just ten years ago, Whitman County Library hit rock bottom. With $31 in
the bank and piles of problems, the library was going nowhere fast.
Slowly and patiently, through dedication and hard work the library
pulled itself up by the bootstraps, quickly changing course and quietly
turning heads.

In this two hour workshop, find out how this "Little Library That Could"
re-examined nearly every facet of operations from its board of trustees,
staffing practices and community involvement to planning, marketing and
the Friends of the Library. In this two-hour workshop, Library director
Kristie Kirkpatrick shares her secrets for positive change and inspiring
change in your organization.

Dynamic Partnering

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

*	Identify strategies for communicating with local organizations
and residents to plan dynamic and compelling programs
*	Learn how to implement diverse programming ideas which will
enhance and support their library's mission
*	come away with concrete examples and creative ideas that will
help them start thinking "outside the box"
