[OPLINLIST] Foreign language learning products

Kay,

Rosetta Stone has been a popular product with our patrons too. Because
of the change in their service model we find ourselves looking into
alternatives as well.

I've sent e-mails or made phone calls to the following
vendors/publishers inquiring about the availability of the any web-based
language learning services:

Topics Entertainment (Instant Immersion)
Nova Development (Berlitz)
Transparent Language
Pimsleur

So far, the only response I've received is from Pimsleur. They've
suggested that they're working on a web-based product, but they're so
early in the process they don't even have a schedule. If I get any more
nibbles I'll be sure to post them up.

In that regard, it wouldn't hurt if other libraries contacted publishers
as well. Good companies are quick to adapt to markets and fill customer
needs. If libraries make it clear there's a market for products like
this, I expect someone will step in to fill it.

Our library had a trial subscription to Rosetta Stone, which proved
very popular with our patrons. However, that company is no longer
permitting remote access through library websites, so we are looking for
a comparable product that will allow our patrons to learn languages at
home using their computers. What products have worked in your
libraries? Are there any problems of which we should be aware?
Gracias/Merci/etc.
