Long version:
The Kelton House Museum and Garden is proud to announce a special tour that
will let visitors experience the splendor of the holiday season - 19th
century-style!

Harriet Beecher Stowe described a Christmas tree in 1850: "Our Christmas tree
was a fine spruce and when it sat on the table it touched the wall, and I
made four gilt stars for the four top branches, and Ma dressed a little doll like
a fairy in white with gilt spangles & a gilt band around her head with a star
on the end & gauze wings spangled with gold. She was placed in the tree with
her wand pointing to the presents on it & there was no end to the gilt apples
and nuts etc."

During December, the Museum will recreate this Nineteenth-century world with
ornaments and decorations from the collection of Michael Girard. Mr. Girard
is a

2-2-2-2-2

long-time collector of holiday decorations and is a member of the Golden Glow
Club, whose members collect vintage holiday artifacts. His collection
includes feather trees, homemade "scrap" ornaments made from chromolithograph
pictures, spun glass, tinsel and other found materials as well as early glass
ornaments.

The Kelton House Museum is open for tours and to view the Michael Girard
collection every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. A costumed docent leads visitors through
the Museum and tells the story of the Kelton family and holiday traditions in
the context of 19th century Columbus life. In addition, during the month of
December, the Museum has extended hours: Fridays, 12 noon. - 2 p.m. The Museum
will be closed on December 25. Tours arranged by appointment Monday through
Friday. Cost per person for the tour is $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens
and $2 for children. For more information, call the Kelton House at 464-2022.

General Information about the Kelton House Museum:

The Kelton House Museum & Garden is located at 586 E. Town Street in downtown
Columbus. Built in 1852 by Fernando Cortez and Sophia Stone Kelton, the
House has been preserved with Kelton family Victorian treasures from the 1800's.
Strong Abolitionists, the Kelton family hid fugitive slaves and was part of
the Underground Railroad.

In 1975, when Grace Kelton, the granddaughter of Fernando and Sophia, died,
her will entrusted the property to the Columbus Foundation with the stipulation
that her family home be preserved and used for educational purposes. In 1976,
The Junior League of Columbus took on the task of renovating and restoring
the house and garden to create a museum of 19th-century life.

Today, the Kelton House Museum and Garden is a community service of the
Junior League of Columbus that offers an ongoing program of house tours, special
events and educational opportunities. An active volunteer program provides a
training ground for individuals interested in historic preservation, the
decorative arts, American History and museum management.
