talents and interests to create five programs that entertain as well as
inform.

OHIO HISTORY

A Journey into Ohio's Amazing Past

Journey back two-hundred years when Ohio was part of the Northwest
Territory. Meet one of Ohio's early settlers and learn through stories and
songs how Ohio and its people helped shape this country. Watch Ohio's
transformation from wilderness to settlements to statehood.

Learn in an interesting and entertaining way from someone "who was there"
when Ohio became a state. Learn how Ohioans contributed to the efforts in
both the War of 1812 and the Civil War! Learn about Fort Meigs and the
Battle of Lake Erie! Learn how the canal boats brought prosperity to a
growing state! Learn what it was like to be a teacher and a student in Ohio
two hundred years ago!

Other programs Doug offers include:

LIVING HISTORY THROUGH STORY, HUMOR AND SONG

JOHNNY APPLESEED

This program is about a famous and colorful character who lived during the
late 1700's to the mid 1800's; John Chapman, more commonly known as Johnny
Appleseed. Through the years tales of Johnny Appleseed have made this man
appear to be more fiction that fact, but Johnny Appleseed was an important
naturalist who was responsible for many of the original apple orchards that
were planted throughout Ohio and Indiana. Johnny Appleseed appears in his
feed sack clothing and iron pot hat to tell of the people and animals that
he met during his travels and how he learned to live in harmony with nature.

CANAL BOAT CAPTAIN

This program presents the 1880's way of life on the adventurous, romantic
and sometimes dangerous canal system of Ohio. Mr. Bahnsen portrays Captain
Bahnsen, an 1880's canal boat captain on the Miami and Erie Canal. The
canals opened Ohio to the rest of our developing nation, transporting
farmers' grain and produce as well as people and their cultures to parts of
the country that were previously impossible to travel. Captain Bahnsen
presents slides, tells stories of the daily canal boat life, and plays his
banjo performing songs that were popular during this exciting and important
time in Ohio.

JOHN MUIR

A Conversation with John Muir (1838-1914), The Father of Conservation. Join
Mr. Bahnsen as he portrays John Muir, and listen as he discusses his efforts
to save the Hetch Hetchy Valley near Yosemite National Park from a
government- damming project. Listen as he talks of his battles to protect
Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and the Petrified Forest from loggers, miners
and ranchers. Enjoy this living history program depicting John Muir, the
original pioneer of conservation, complete with a beautiful slide
presentation of flora and fauna from the John Muir National Historical Site,
and Yosemite National Park.

HENRY DAVID THOREAU

Visit with Henry David Thoreau, America's Naturalist and Philosopher
(1817-1862). Join Mr. Thoreau as he talks of his life and recalls his two
years at his cabin on Walden Pond. Take part in conversation with him and
learn how his opinions of society, mankind, and nature are more relevant
today than they were during his lifetime. Discover how this 19th century
writer has influenced great leaders of the 20th century with his philosophy
that the simple life is the most rewarding life.
