Innovations in Library Design - Includes Five Workshops

http://www.swonlibraries.org/viewevent?id=1390

Take a tour of innovative library design throughout the SWON Libraries
region this summer. Several of our libraries have redesigned their
spaces or are in entirely new buildings. We have selected one library
from each type to feature in this summer series.

If you attend ALL FOUR of the library events, you will be registered to
attend the wrap-up session FOR FREE. If you register for the series with
the link below, you are registering for ALL FIVE SESSIONS described.

(To register for individual workshops, see the descriptions posted on
the SWON Libraries events list under each individual date.)

Innovation in Library Design--Complete Series

May 23, 2008
Sinclair Community College
Dayton, Ohio
9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Hosted by Doug Kaylor, Librarian
The Library at Sinclair Community College went through a radical
re-design a couple of years ago. Join our host, Doug Kaylor, for a
design oriented tour of this underground library. Highlights include:
Starbucks (!) smack dab in the middle of the library; extensive computer
workstations; glass-enclosed visible student classrooms and work areas;
semi-circular all-in-one service desk; integration with other campus
services.

June 20, 2008
Ursuline Academy, Blue Ash, Ohio
2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Hosted by Librarian, Julie Burwinkel, joined by the architect, Ellen
Costanzo.
Ursuline Academy just completed a large remodeling project that moved
the library right where it belongs--front and center when you enter the
school. Join librarian Julie Burwinkel and the architect who designed
the space, Ellen Costanzo, to learn about some of their interesting
design decisions. See how placement can truly integrate library services
into the mission of the organization.

July 18, 2008
Boone County Public Library, Burlington, Kentucky
1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Hosted by Cindy Brown, joined by her space designer.
This is your opportunity to get a thorough tour of the new Main Branch
of the Boone County Public Library System. This prominent new building
is bursting with new ideas and design concepts that have never been
tried in our area. See first-hand: 100% self-check-out system;
information kiosks that provide community information for patrons; new
shelving concepts in the children's area; integrated snack areas.

August 29, 2008
Lloyd Library and Museum, Cincinnati, Ohio
10 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Hosted by Library Director, Maggie Heran
The Lloyd Library and Museum is an historical gem of the Cincinnati
area. The library recently went through a major remodeling so that its
beautiful space would match its outstanding collections. Join Librarian,
Maggie Heran, to learn about the design features she selected to
highlight this wonderful asset.

September 12, 2008
SWON Libraries Office, Blue Ash, Ohio
10 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (lunch included)
This is the wrap-up session of the entire series. Library design
experts, Michelle Guillette and Anita Carroll will provide us with an
overview of the construction and design process. Some of the things that
they will cover include:
--nuts and bolts issues with construction and planning that can cost a
lot of money if
you don't plan ahead and/or know what you're doing
--how to transform a library on a budget
--how to work with a designer to get the most out of your project
Our speakers will also comment on all of the projects featured
throughout the series, based on photos taken during the tours.
