[OPLINLIST] Road Runner in Libraries

Bob mentioned HTTP caching. I though I'd expound that a bit:

While HTTP caching isn't as effective as it was years ago (now that
there are more dynamic pages as opposed to static), it is still very
useful, especially when doing common downloads to multiple machines.
Microsoft Updates are a big one, but the same applies to Linux, Adobe,
Apple, Symantec, etc. updates. It can go quite a way towards reducing
your bandwidth usage. Check with your firewall
consultant/manufacturer/provider/distro and see if it's a feature you
can easily add or enable. It might even be cheaper than paying for RR +
reconfiguring your network to accommodate it.

FWIW, I just checked Bob's (Community Library) HTTP caching stats. It
looks like he's getting an average of 26.29% cache hits per hour, for a
total of about 25.5MB of saved bandwidth per hour. It also reports that
he's averaging about 97.2MB worth of transfers per hour. (Note that's
HTTP traffic only and doesn't include other non-HTTP network traffic.
...For the un-initiated, you can think of HTTP traffic as general
Internet browsing. It should be the majority usage of your Internet access.)

Saving a quarter of your bandwidth from needlessly clogging the T-1 is
good for all of us.

Chad
