Bob mentioned HTTP caching. I though I'd expound that a bit:
While HTTP caching isn't as effective as it was years ago (now that there are more dynamic pages as opposed to static), it is still very useful, especially when doing common downloads to multiple machines. Microsoft Updates are a big one, <snip>

This has long been a problem for me but, I finally took the plunge and set up WSUS ( <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/wsus/default.aspx> Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) Home). It was really painless and works well. It downloads the updates at night and I can tell it what I want approved for install and what I don’t. Updates that took an hour (& 100+ megs) now takes only minutes to install on our network. Changing Vista & Windows 7 to look at the WSUS server only takes minutes (XP is a little more involved ).The WSUS also feeds me reports about the updates and any problems updating any of our computers.
>From start to finish the install took me a couple of days (including reading the manual).
