*Spring Literary Arts Festival to open****
with casino night & dance exhibition***
/A Spring Literary Arts Festival---On the Home Front: Rivets, Rations,
and Romance/in McArthur, Ohio will officially begin on Friday, April 15
with a peek inside the culture of the 1940s. The first activity of the
weekend-long event will be /The Stars and Stripes Club/, complete with a
casino night and a dance exhibition by /The Jitterbug Club /of Ohio
University in Athens.
The nightclub experience of the 40s would often involve dinner, drinks,
dancing and entertainment. Whether it was music or comedy, the big city
establishments were guaranteed to have the best performers around. Most
large hotels had restaurants and ballrooms, often with their own
orchestras and radio shows, and nothing was more glamorous than visiting
the most elegant hotel in town, riding the elevator up to the rooftop
ballroom and dancing the night away.
Beyond the city lights, the local hot spot was often a dance hall on the
edge of town. Finding live music and people who loved to dance to it was
easy. Countless small bands toured the country, appearing at local
armories, gymnasiums and auditoriums. However, the hot spot for gamblers
and gangsters was Havana, Cuba. But when they decided to move the action
stateside, they chose Las Vegas, and the dusty frontier town was soon
transformed into an entertainment capital.
As with many nightclubs of the time, games such as roulette, blackjack,
and poker could be found in the back room./The Stars and Stripes Club
/will recreate this era with games, food, a cash bar and 1940s music to
encourage dancing at 6 p.m. in the McArthur VFW Hall Post #5299.
Period costumes are encouraged but are not required.Tickets will be on
sale at the library and the door.Admission is just $5.00.
