[OPLINLIST] Educational Reform: An opportunity for input from librarians.

Educational Reform:  The U.S. Department of Education is seeking input
from all types of stakeholders and interested parties as to what schools
need to best educate and prepare students.  The Department has
established 10 Regional Advisory Committees to collect information on
the educational needs across the country. This is a unique opportunity
for state and local educators, school officials, librarians, business
leaders, state education agencies, parents, the community and others to
provide input on educational needs and ways to address those needs.
Information will be collected by the advisory committees and will be
used to create a report for U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. 

The Midwest Regional Advisory Committee includes two Ohio
representatives, Marty Frazier, a teacher at Citizens Academy (a
community school in Cleveland) and Michele Timmons, Care Team
Collaborative Director at Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center in
Zanesville. They are serving together with 8 representatives from
Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.  Their primary
duties are to conduct an educational needs assessment by requesting
input from stakeholders throughout Ohio.  

 

This is a rare opportunity for anyone interested in education to assist
in furthering educational reform efforts.  Take advantage of this
opportunity to have a voice in the nationwide needs assessment and make
sure that libraries have a role in the education process.  

 

Here are some of the things librarians can do to have input into the
process:

 

1.   Learn more about the purpose of the RAC: 

*     Review the Federal Registrar for more information:

*     Review the meeting summaries and minutes from your Midwest RAC -
go to: http://www.seiservices.com/rac/ Click on "Midwest" in dropdown.
Choose the link for meeting summaries on the top right. 

*     Review the attached document "Midwest RAC Needs Draft 1 5242011". 

 

2.    Listen in to one of the two Midwest-RAC webinars and find out what
RAC members are planning.

*     Go to: http://www.seiservices.com/rac/ to register for one of the
webinars.  Click on "Midwest" in the dropdown box. Choose the link for
meeting schedules and registration on the top right. 

Webinar 1: June 14 1-3pm (EST)

Webinar 2: June 21 1-3pm (EST)

 

3.    Provide comments and feedback to Midwest-RAC members by

*     Clicking on the comment link at http://www.seiservices.com/rac/
