Kent State University's School of Library and Information Science presents a Wednesday Webinar:

Digital Libraries and Digital Preservation - What are they, and what are the career opportunities? Virtual open house - Wednesday, Oct. 26, at noon

When: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, noon to 1 p.m.

There's been a lot of buzz about digital libraries, and everyone in the information field is talking about digital preservation. What are digital libraries? What does digital preservation entail? What are the latest developments? What are the career opportunities in these fields? What courses fall within these specializations?

Tune in to a live, interactive open house and hear from three of the top scholars in these areas. You will be able to ask questions and interact with the internationally renowned faculty in real time.

The session will start promptly at noon (EDT) on Wednesday, Oct. 26.  If you do not already have Silverlight on your computer, you will need to download that in order to view the presentation. It's free at http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/.  Click on the "Download Silverlight" icon in the top right corner.
 
In order to submit questions during the live presentation, click on the "cloud" icon located at the bottom right hand side of the presentation screen.  Please include your email address before submitting your question. This will allow us to respond to any questions we're not able to answer during the open house.

Presenters: 

Catherine Smith, Ph.D., assistant professor, SLIS, is Principal investigator on Google Research Award , $76,000, for "A description of domain-independent search expertise," awarded summer 2011.  She also has numerous publications and presentations to her credit. Karen Gracy, Ph.D., assistant professor, SLIS, is the author of "Film Preservation:  Competing Definitions of Value, Use, and Practice (Chicago: Society of American Archivists). She also is co-PI on a Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in the amount of $219,386, to study how libraries and museums can provide greater access to digital content through Linked Open Data. Yin Zhang, Ph.D., professor, School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University, has published extensively and delivered presentations internationally on digital libraries. She has led numerous committees in the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and is a frequent presenter at its conferences. Her research has earned grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Research Center for Educational Technology and Ohio Board of Regents/Research Challenge.
