Ohio Author Events and Book Fair for National Library Week

The Hudson Library & Historical Society will be hosting several special events recognizing Ohio authors as part of its celebration of National Library Week. On Thursday, April 12 at 7 p.m., author Dr. Mary Doria Russell comes for a conversation with National Public Radio affiliate station WKSU reporter Kabir Bhatia. Russell will discuss the writing process, her recent book about Doc Holiday, “Doc," and the upcoming HBO series on which it was based. The pilot is being directed by Ron Howard.

The Learned Owl Book Shop will be on hand to sell any of Russell’s five titles including "Doc," now in paperback. They will also be at the Book Fair on Saturday.

On Saturday, April 14 at 10 a.m., a panel of writers and illustrators of children's books will discuss their work and share their knowledge about the writing and publishing process. The panel will include award-winning historical fiction author and educator, Shelley Pearsall; picture book author and illustrator, Lindsay Ward; and elementary-grade author Tricia Springstubb. The panel discussion will be moderated by Jean Daigneau, a freelance writer and former regional advisor for the Northern Ohio Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Also on Saturday, you won’t want to miss meeting Akron’s own Tom Batiuk, creator of “Funky Winkerbean.” Batiuk’s latest book, “Funky Winkerbean, Volume 1” will be out March 27 in honor of the 40th anniversary of the first appearance of the comic strip in the newspapers. Batiuk is just one of the many authors taking part in the Ohio Author Book Fair, which will run from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Over 30 authors, all Buckeyes, will gather in the Flood Family meeting room with teen and children’s book authors and illustrators in the rotunda. Patrons will have an opportunity to talk about books and writing, add to their collections by purchasing autographed books, and mingle among the literary literati. A wide variety of fiction, nonfiction and poetry writers will be present.

No registration is required at any of the events. Contact the reference desk at 330-653-6658x1010 for more information. For a list of authors scheduled to attend, please see the library’s website at hudsonlibrary.org.
