Please excuse multiple postings...

Good afternoon,

SERLS and SWON Libraries are hosting a day-long workshop with Saroj
Ghoting, "Criss Cross Applesauce: Making Multiage Storytimes the Best
They Can Be". With less time and tight staffing, many libraries have
moved to "all-ages" early childhood programming. This will be a great
opportunity to explore the possibilities and what works. The workshop
will be offered 4 times:

Monday, November 12 in Greenville: http://tiny.cc/applesauce_nov12

Tuesday, November 13 in Wilmington: http://tiny.cc/applesauce_nov13

Thursday, November 15 in Wellston: http://goo.gl/RGUCy

Friday, November 16 in Caldwell: http://goo.gl/Mbhbe

Full day (6 content hours, 7.5 hours including lunch/breaks). Cost
$50-100; see registration links above for details, or download the flyer
for this workshop here: http://tiny.cc/criss-cross (PDF).

This workshop provides a thorough introduction to the whys and hows of
planning and presenting storytimes targeted for newborn to
five-year-olds and their parents/caregivers. Includes information on
child development, demonstration of storytime models, examples of how to
present books/activities in different ways to meet the needs of the wide
age range of children, and ways to share early literacy information as
part of storytime. Hands-on practice and idea sharing bring it all to
life. Attendees are asked to bring the words to an action
rhyme/fingerplay or action song, and a picture book that works well for
more than one age group.

Early literacy is a key element of helping children enter school ready
to learn to read. According to the organization Zero to Three, the
definition of early literacy is what children know about communication,
verbal and nonverbal language, reading, and writing before they can
actually read and write. Early literacy encompasses the child's totality
of experiences with conversation, oral and written stories, books, and
print. Public libraries continue to position themselves to support
families, child care providers, and communities to help every child
enter school ready to learn to read.

Saroj Ghoting is an Early Childhood Literacy Consultant and national
trainer on early literacy. She presents early literacy training and
information sessions at national, regional, and state conferences, and
training for library staff and their partners.

I hope you will consider attending or sending your children's/storytime
staff member to this useful workshop!

Sincerely,

Janet
