As weary troops disengaged near the small, now famous
Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg onJuly 4, 1863,
victorious Union soldiers at last entered thebesieged town of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Although the Vicksburg campaign doesnot elicit the response that Gettysburg enjoys today,
during the Civil War itssurrender was as monumental. The citadelof the west required two years of fighting on land and water with thousands of soldiers employed defending andattacking with a combined loss of nearly 20,000 casualties.

Thirty Nine Ohio Regiments orBatteries participate in the siege including
Oscar Kelton’s 95th Ohio.

Historian Dennis M. Keesee brings tolife those dark days on the Mississippi with
soldier stories from those whowere there
presented with his usual humorous andinformative manner.
