[OPLINLIST] "Classics" Change

What’s popular doesn’t stay popular. That’s obvious, but it feels pretty strange when your old musical favorites start showing up on Classic Rock or Oldies radio stations. 

Christmas movies are another good example. Lots of people consider “It’s A Wonderful Life” to be required viewing over the holidays, but according to this NPR story , that movie is a favorite for far fewer people than it used to be. 

This year, it’s the Will Ferrell movie “Elf” that will be showing on 24-hour repeat through Christmas Eve. “Elf” may not seem old enough to be a classic, but it came out in 2003. For a 20 year-old, it might be a nostalgic film they remember from childhood. 

So if you want to create library programming for 20-somethings or other underserved demographics, relying on past programming favorites might be the wrong way to go. These groups have their own lists of classics. “Elf” is a part of their popular culture, like “A Christmas Story” is part of mine. 

Learning more about the audience you want to reach is a great way to get introduced. To learn ways you can use pop culture to connect to patrons, pick up Linda Behen’s Recharge Your Library Programs with Pop Culture and Technology or read NPR’s pop culture blog, Monkey See . 

If this feels like a knock on your favorite holiday flicks, don’t get Grinchy. Young people’s preferences really aren’t inscrutable. Finding them requires some research, from a slightly different list of sources.
