Hi Susan,

Below is our policy. Basically, a person possessing a card means they have the right to use it whether that is to access a public computer or check items out. If you lose your card tell us so we can cancel it and issue you a new one. If someone else uses it without your permission there's nothing we can do without a police report.

The Washington County Public Library provides free lending of library materials to eligible borrowers. To get a library card come in to any Washington County Public Library location and bring something with your name and current address preprinted. Those under age 18 must have a parent or legal guardian present to get a card.
Out-of-state borrowers are charged a $10 yearly user fee.

Library card holders must have their library card with them in order to check out materials.

Library card holders are financially responsible for any and all uses of their library card at any and all times. Card holders with more than $10 in overdue fines or, who have been reported to the Library’s collection services provider, will not be allowed to check out any other materials or use the public access computers until the account has been resolved. However, overdue materials and fines will not prevent a patron from reserving items or using the facilities. Fines do not accrue on items set to lost or damaged. Items can be renewed online, by telephone, or in person TWO TIMES unless they are on reserve by others or when restrictions beyond the library’s control apply. Checkout period for items borrowed from other libraries follow that library’s loan period and cannot be changed. No more than 100 items can be checked out by a single borrower. No more than 50 items can be reserved by a single borrower. DVD/blue-ray and console game checkouts are limited to 5 per card.

It is solely the parent or guardian’s responsibility to oversee a child’s usage and selection of library materials as well as computer use.

Items on reserve MUST be checked out with the card they were ordered on. If someone other than the cardholder is picking up the items, they MUST have that person’s card.

Please report lost cards to the Library ASAP as the owner of the card is responsible for all items checked out on their card. New cards cost $1.00.

Do any libraries have policies / procedures that allow a spouse to use the other’s library card?

Thank you,
