[Logo for Serve Ohio]<http://www.serveohio.org/>The State Library of Ohio was recently awarded a 2013 Ohio AmeriCorps Formula Planning grant for $29,077 from the Commission on Service and Volunteerism (ServeOhio)<http://www.serveohio.org/> to develop a program for public libraries called Guiding Ohio Online. State Library of Ohio staff Mandy Knapp <mailto:aknapp at library.ohio.gov> and Ashlee Tominey<mailto:atominey at library.ohio.gov> wrote the funding proposal and will be responsible for the one year planning project to begin August 1, 2013. The focus will be to build capacity for the implementation of a successful AmeriCorps program. Grant funds will be used to develop the program plan and training packages, collect feedback and identify rural libraries to participate in Guiding Ohio Online, and recruit AmeriCorps members.

“The critical role of public libraries in helping people connect with government services is becoming even more important as more government resources and services make the transition to digital formats. The need for this assistance is often greater in rural communities where less than half of households have high-speed Internet access at home,” expressed State Librarian Beverly Cain. “The Guiding Ohio Online program will directly address this need by providing residents of rural areas the opportunity to obtain the digital skills they need to find and use vital e-government resources and services.”

The State Library of Ohio provides statewide training, programs, services, and resources to public library systems in Ohio. The Guiding Ohio Online program plan will detail strategies for AmeriCorps members to perform training sessions, hands-on help, and other services to fulfill the vision of every Ohioan being able to fully participate in e-government, search for jobs online, understand the risks and benefits to internet finance connect with family online, and protect personal information in the digital age. Guiding Ohio Online will target populations in rural Ohio resulting in enhanced digital skills. “This project aligns with the State Library’s vision of A Smarter Ohio,” said Missy Lodge, Associate State Librarian for Library Development. “The Library Programs and Development Office continually looks for opportunities to work with other agencies and organizations to develop cooperative solutions to meet library service needs. This grant initiates a new partnership with potential long-term impacts.”

ServeOhio is purposed specifically to administer grants in Ohio under the federal National & Community Service Trust Act of 1993. Today, the largest of these grants is the AmeriCorps program, where Ohio currently has 21 partner organizations and over 600 AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps programs<http://www.serveohio.org/programs/americorps/> provide opportunities for Americans to make an intensive commitment to service. The AmeriCorps network of local, state, and national service programs engages more than 70,000 Americans each year.

AmeriCorps members serve through more than 3,000 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and other community organizations. Through their direct service, AmeriCorps members help meet critical needs in target areas.
