[OPLINLIST] Time to Restart?

    “Have you tried turning it off and on again?”

It can be frustrating to call tech support and hear this question before 
you’ve fully explained the problem. Why is it the first thing they ask? 
Because lots of computer issues disappear when you restart.

A British show named “The IT Crowd” made this phrase famous, in one 
episode, rigging a reel-to-reel player to automatically play that 
question to every caller. Absurd? Sure, and good customer service 
includes better listening skills than these. But it really is a good 
place to begin troubleshooting a problem.

It’s one of the first questions I ask when someone calls me with a 
computer issue. /But does this fix it?/ If the computer is back to 
working normally, I call it fixed. That’s not a very satisfying answer, 
especially to someone who’s googled the problem and tried a lot of steps 
before rebooting.
