[OPLINLIST] Where's the tomato?

If your sandwich came without a tomato, you’d blame the restaurant. If 
you owned a restaurant when a tomato shortage hit 
<http://money.cnn.com/2010/03/09/news/economy/tomato_shortage_fast_food/> and 
tomato prices tripled, you wouldn’t wait for complaints. You’d put signs 
on the door explaining the shortage and asking your customers to be patient.

Libraries are facing an ebook shortage. Along with complaints at the 
reference desk, there are people using the high cost of ebooks to 
predict the end of libraries, as in this article: 
http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/13/the-end-of-the-library/. This may not 
be a discussion we enjoy, but not participating in it will likely make 
matters worse. It’s time to put up more signs.

We should also share the progress we’re making with digital content, and 
that’s what we’ll be doing at SWON’s Ebook Mini-Conference. You can 
learn about OhioLink’s ebook pilot program, early literacy iPad apps, 
and productive ways to use e-readers with homebound adults, ebook 
collection development for young adults and ways to navigate e-reader 
tech support issues.

You’ll also hear about the state of ebooks from the Public Library of 
Hamilton County and Cincinnati’s director, Kim Fender. She’ll share the 
latest news from publishers and from conversations in Washington D.C. 
We’ll share lunch and close the day with SWON’s Membership Meeting, 
which is open to everyone!
