An Incredible Storyof an Escaped Slave Turned Magician!

Fromthe beginnings of the republic through the years of the Civil War, tens ofthousands of slaves sought freedom in the north. They walked, rode trains andwere transported in wagons with false bottoms. They were sometimes ingeniouslydisguised and costumed.  One of the most creativeescapes was that by Henry “Box” Brown, who, in 1848, engineered his escape byhaving himself sealed in a wooden crate and shipped to freedom!
 
Henry “Box” Brown: AnIncredible Story of an Escaped Slave Turned Magician! is a program createdand performed by magician Rory Rennick. In this first-person portrayal, Rennickincorporates a multidisciplinary presentation that is informative, motivationaland entertaining. Attendees will learn about one of the greatest escapes fromslavery ever recorded from one of the most creative minds in entertainmenttoday. Experience the history, the mystery and the mindset of a man who riskeddeath to be free.
 
Aspart of the Kelton House Trails of Hope series, the Kelton House Museum, 586East Town Street, Columbus, will host Henry“Box” Brown: An Incredible Story of an Escaped Slave Turned Magician! onSunday, September 28, 2014, at 2:00 p.m.
 
Theprogram also includes a Q & A segment and incredible feats ofprestidigitation.

General Information
 
TheKelton House Museum & Garden is located at 586 E. Town Street in downtownColumbus.  Built in 1852 by FernandoCortez and Sophia Stone Kelton, the House has been preserved with Kelton familytreasures from the 1800s.  StrongAbolitionists, the Kelton family hid fugitive slaves and gave long term supportto a particular African-American family. In 1975, when Grace Kelton, thegranddaughter of Fernando and Sophia, died, her will entrusted the property tothe Columbus Foundation with the stipulation that her family home be preservedand used as a museum of local history and the decorative arts. In 1976, TheJunior League of Columbus took on the task of renovating and restoring thehouse and garden to create a museum of 19th-century life.
 
Today,the Kelton House Museum and Garden is a community service of the Junior Leagueof Columbus that offers an ongoing program of house tours, special events andeducational opportunities. An active volunteer program provides a trainingground for individuals interested in historic preservation, the decorativearts, American History and museum management.
