The @HistoryInPics Twitter account has over a million followers. So they’re doing pretty well on that count. Their pictures have captions, too, but proper citations? Links to more information? No and no. Sound like trouble? Yes and yes. Orphan Works

According to the Duke University Center for the Study of the Public Domain , orphan works are “still presumably under copyright (only works published before 1923 are conclusively in the public domain), but the copyright owner cannot be found.” A surprisingly large number of works fit this description.

There’s lots of interest in photographic collections, which you can see in Tumblr blogs from National Geographic , Houghton Library or the DPLA . These sites are careful to give attribution for these images, which is copyright-correct, but it also conveys accurate context to viewers.

When that context isn’t known, a photograph isn’t just an image without a label. It’s a potential lawsuit. That can leave libraries with collections they can’t share online out of caution, leaving those collections undiscovered by potential audiences. Missing context also leaves plenty of space for mistakes, misinformation and outright untruth. If you’re a historian or simply interested in history, that’s troubling .

The U.S. Copyright Office is asking for public comments to help them approach future copyright legislation. You can read comments from the last round of discussion (in 2012) and prepare to share your own comments at their website: http://copyright.gov/orphan/ . Ready for a Refresher on Copyright?

Come to SWON’s Staff Training Symposium on March 25th , where one of the breakout sessions will be run by Isaac Molnar, Intellectual Property Counsel to the Ohio Attorney General. He’ll talk about copyright and fair use as it applies to libraries.

With Early Bird Pricing available until the end of February, the time to sign up is now: http://bit.ly/swon-sts .

Build a Better Flyer at the Microsoft Publisher Level-Up Lab

You don’t have to create flyers or other documents from scratch every time. Publisher makes it easy to set up a file with a set of frequently-used fonts, layouts, colors and/or images. Not only could you create your own rough-and-ready style guide for reference. You can use that file as a template to start from.

For me, this makes it easier to be creative; it’s a blank page that often makes it most difficult to get started. Whether you’re creating a poster for Summer Reading or an database instruction guide for faculty, Publisher can make the job easier. At the Publisher Lab, Nathan will show you how.

The Lab is next week, February 19th, so register today! http://bit.ly/publisher-lab
