[OPLINLIST] STEM for All Seasons

Our focus in the upcoming March (and last October) Summer Reading 
Program workshop is on STEM. No one I’ve talked to has too many STEM 
programs ready to go. So although Summer Reading is in the title, it’s 
just one place you might use the programming ideas discussed that day.

*Here are a few ideas from last October’s STEM SRP workshop you could 
put to work.*

I led a session on brushbots

a small vibrating motor on top of a toothbrush head. Everyone in the 
session built their own brushbot with kits from MakerShed.com 
<http://www.makershed.com/BrushBot_Party_Pack_p/msbbrp.htm>, and then we 
created a couple experiments/games that used the brushbots.

Since then, I’ve found the ScienceBuddies.org 
<http://ScienceBuddies.org> blog. Search for “robotics” 
<http://www.sciencebuddies.org/mt/mt-search.cgi?blog_id=1&tag=robotics&limit=20> 
there and you’ll find guides that extend the basic brushbot in 
challenging new directions, including brushbots that follow the light 
<http://www.sciencebuddies.org/blog/2013/12/family-robotics-toothbrush-bots-that-follow-the-light.php>!

Also featured at the workshop was the AIMS Education Foundation 
<http://aimsedu.org>, which has lots of resources for sale. Their 
“activity books” are a great source for educational projects. Their blog 
<http://blog.aimsedu.org> has some great (and sometimes free) resources, 
too.

Melanie put together a Powerpoint presentation of 20 websites where kids 
can do online, STEM-related activities. Her presentation was 20 minutes 
long, but you can review her list at a leisurely pace by downloading it

    Brushbot Drop-In

Want to put on a brushbot program at your library, but you’re not quite 
ready to lead it? Invite Nathan! Order the brushbot kits yourself, and 
Nathan will bring the tools to assemble them and the materials to build 
two small game boards. He’ll be there to lead your patrons through 
building and testing them. The cost is just $50 for a SWON Supporting 
Member or $100 for a Geographic Member. He’s scheduling times in June 
and July, 2014, but if you’re interested in a different time, just send
