IMLS Three Year National Leadership Grant
Family Place Libraries™: A Model for Institutional Change

Year One Update - Ohio

Family Place Libraries: A Model for Institutional Change addresses the need for: (1) a framework for early childhood and family support services in a public library setting that is evidence-based, focused on parents/caregivers as first teachers, organized around the developmental needs of the whole child and intrinsically linked with other family support agencies and (2) recognition of the library as a key institution within the early childhood and family support community, and a partner in the promotion of healthy child and family development.

To meet these needs, Middle Country Public Library (MCPL) Family Place<http://www.middlecountrypubliclibrary.org/children/early-childhood/family-place-libraries/> is working with 28 partner libraries (15 systems) in eight states (CO, OH, KS, MI, NM, NV, OK and TX). Our partner libraries in Ohio are Cuyahoga and Stark County.

The first year of this grant was designed to build a strong foundation by enhancing skills of children’s services staff and enriching the internal culture of the Library relative to early childhood and family centered services. To that end administrators and children’s librarians from four branches of the Cuyahoga County Library and two branches of the Stark County Library:

• Attended a three-day Family Place Training Institute and logged seven hours of online course instruction.

• Created local Communication Plans for public relations within their local communities and for future dissemination in the library field.

• Began implementation of the Family Place model including determining the amount of space and placement of the Family Place area on the public floor, ordering books, open-ended toys and other materials for the floor area as well as the Parent Child Workshop, educating library staff, identifying local agencies to partner in the development of Family Place, and documenting grant activities.

• Began creating promotional materials utilizing templates from a Communications Toolkit developed specifically for Partner Libraries.

• Participated in four follow-up training webinars: Engaging with Parents: Communication and Facilitation Strategies, Play, Marketing Family Place and Building Relationships with Community Partners.
