Kelton House Museumand Garden Announces
Recollections of theWellington Rescue
 
(Columbus,March 19, 2014) – 
Aspart of the Kelton House Second Sunday Trails of Hope series, the Kelton HouseMuseum, 586 East Town Street, Columbus, will host Recollections of the Wellington Rescue on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at3:00 p.m.
 
Recollections of theWellington Rescueis a program created and performed by the members of the Kelton House UndergroundRailroad Community Advisory Committee that commemorates the dramatic eventsthat occurred in Wellington and Oberlin, Ohio in 1858. The narrative centers onthe capture of a runaway by bounty hunters and the action of local anti-slaverystudents and townspeople who freed the runaway from his jail.
 
Carefullyselected narratives from periodicals and historical scholars, specificallydrawn from the book, The Town thatStarted the Civil War by Nat Brandt, form the basis of the program.

General Information
 
TheKelton House Museum & Garden is located at 586 E. Town Street in downtownColumbus.  Built in 1852 by FernandoCortez and Sophia Stone Kelton, the House has been preserved with Kelton familytreasures from the 1800’s.  StrongAbolitionists, the Kelton family hid fugitive slaves and gave long term supportto a particular African-American family. In 1975, when Grace Kelton, thegranddaughter of Fernando and Sophia, died, her will entrusted the property tothe Columbus Foundation with the stipulation that her family home be preservedand used as a museum of local history and the decorative arts. In 1976, TheJunior League of Columbus took on the task of renovating and restoring thehouse and garden to create a museum of 19th-century life.
 
Today,the Kelton House Museum and Garden is a community service of the Junior Leagueof Columbus that offers an ongoing program of house tours, special events andeducational opportunities. An active volunteer program provides a trainingground for individuals interested in historic preservation, the decorativearts, American History and museum management.
