[OPLINLIST] 2014 Civil War Symposium: Beyond the Battlefield

The Ohio Civil War 150 Advisory Committee announces the Beyond the Battlefield Civil War Symposium at the Ohio History Center in Columbus, November 7 and 8.

Americans know the Civil War as a military conflict that led to the abolition of slavery. But, the Civil War also touched the lives of Ohioans lives' in unexpected ways that reverberated for generations to come. The war shaped Ohio's government, industry, agriculture, and infrastructure.   Women, African Americans, families, and immigrants all found new roles as men were off fighting for an extended time. The scale and brutality of the conflict prompted Ohioans to think deeply about their values, especially the meaning of equality and citizenship. Until World War II, no public event in Ohio had a more profound impact on its people and their history than the Civil War.

Join historians and members of the Ohio Civil War 150 Advisory Committee as they explore these questions and come with questions of your own for our panelists. The symposium kicks off with a reception at 7pm on November 7, with an introductory talk by noted military historian and Ohio State University professor Mark Grimsley. Grimsley introduces a topic vital to complete understanding of the Civil War but often lost amid the emphasis on political war measures and battlefield events:  the Northern and Southern home fronts. Admission to the reception is $20/person and advance registration is required.

Saturday, November 8 will feature a day full of panels that are free with admission to the Ohio History Center.  Panel discussions will include: Ohio's Homefront, The War's Impact on Ohio's Citizens, and Ohioans the Civil War Made Famous.
