[OPLINLIST] results of notary poll

Hi everyone!

A couple people asked that I share results of the notary poll. They are as
follows:



*Do you have a notary on staff at your library?*
Of 18 responses 16 said yes, 2 said no.



*Do you have more that one on staff? *
Most libraries have at least one on staff, one library has 9 notaries among
a staff of 75, a couple libraries have a requirement that their managers be
notaries, and if they aren't they must take the test to be a notary.



*Does your library pay the renewal fee?*
All the libraries who responded said that yes, the library pays their fees.
Several libraries pay for the staff person to take the test, and also pays
for their equipment.



*Any pros or cons of having a notary on staff?*
All of the libraries responded that it was a very positive service to
provide. Patrons love that it is free, libraries are often more easily
accessible than banks, and sometimes people that haven't frequented the
library return to become patrons of the library.
One librarian pointed out that though they don't provide a notary, a lot of
people come in asking for a notary because the bank wouldn't do it for some
reason or other. They were perhaps trying to get something by a notary that
wasn't kosher. Although most libraries state that they give their staff the
right to decline any transaction that doesn't feel right, or where both
parties are not present.



*Do you require an appointment be made?*
5 libraries ask that an appointment be made, five libraries asked that
patrons call first to see if a notary is available, and 8 libraries said
no, they do not require an appointment.
