The Ohio Association of Foodbanks and the Ohio Department of Education are offering a free webinar that might be very helpful in providing information and encouragement to libraries considering participation in the USDA Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).  The SFSP 101 webinar will bring in guest speakers from organizations who have run successful programs, and experts from the Ohio Department of Education.  The January 22 webinar is focused toward local government agencies, libraries, and municipal recreation centers.  Similar webinars will take place on Thursday, January 15, focused toward schools, and on Thursday, January 29, focused toward community-based, faith-based, and nonprofit organizations. SFSP is the program that provides healthy free lunches during the summer for children and youth in communities with significant percentages of free/reduced price school lunch eligibility.  Summer lunch programs take place at various community locations, and are designed to provide nourishment and summer enrichment for children and teens.  Many Ohio libraries already participate as lunch sites, or provide programming to other lunch sites in their communities.  But only 1 in 10 Ohio children who receive free or reduced price lunch during the school year also participate during the summer.  More lunch sites and more publicity are urgently needed.  Much more information about and support for Ohio library participation will be made available over coming months, and opportunities will be announced here on OPLINlist.  Librarians are also welcome to contact me at any time for information about the SFSP.


Also, if you already participate as a SFSP site, or would like to get started this summer, and if there is a YMCA in your community, you might contact the Y to ask about their plans.  YMCA USA is offering a grant to local YMCAs (deadline is January 20) where the local Ys can apply to sponsor or be summer meal sites.  For Ys that already are sponsors, expanding to libraries might be a good next step for them.  Even if you are not ready to become a summer meal site, you can still connect with your local Y to offer programmatic support (e.g., bookmobile, on-site storytime or craft programs, etc.). The Ys could also potentially support programming at the library.  It's worth a phone call!
