This Saturday, Lane Library is dedicating a Literary Landmark in honor
of two-time Caldecott Award-winner Robert McCloskey. McCloskey was born
in Hamilton and visited Lane Library as a child. His first book was set
in Hamilton and featured local landmarks including the library.

Lane didn't coin the term Literary Landmark
<http://www.ala.org/united/products_services/literarylandmarks>. It's a
project that's run by ALA
<http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2015/03/united-libraries-dedicate-five-literary-landmarks-children-s-book-week>
that recognizes a special location in your community to commemorate a
deceased literary figure, author or his or her work. Lane's landmark
will be the third in Ohio (there is one in Kentucky and there are none
in Indiana).

Lane Library is unveiling their Literary Landmark as part of their
celebration of Children's Book Week. Other events include "Read Lentil
Day" (*Lentil <http://www.worldcat.org/title/lentil/oclc/1461781>* is
the name of McCloskey's first book), and a walking tour of related
landmarks from the library to the McCloskey Museum.

This is a great way to engage with local history and connect patrons and
authors, and it can go well beyond a hanging a plaque on the wall.
Lane's example shows that this is an opportunity to promote literacy as
well. Congratulations on your Literary Landmark!
