Why a Nonfiction Read-In?

When I landed my first para-professional gig in a library children’s department, being the newest kid on the block, I was given the collection development task nobody else wanted. You got it: I had to select the nonfiction. And it was hard. Not just because I wasn’t as familiar with nonfictional reading (though I wasn’t) but because there are simply fewer resources out there for the evaluation of nonfiction texts. 

Nonfiction tends to get the short shrift from everyone: from publishers, who can see it as more of a bread-and-butter market share than a place for creativity; to book reviewers, who often focus more on fiction titles; to book awards, where the fiction prizes get the lion’s share of attention; to, yes, librarians who often, like me, grew up as avid consumers of fiction with less focus on informational texts.

In March, SWON will be hosting our first nonfiction read-in <http://swonlibraries.org/link.asp?e=director@swonlibraries.org&job=2255256&ymlink=4541480&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fswonlibraries%2Eorg%2Fevents%2FEventDetails%2Easpx%3Fid%3D686351> . We’ve been as guilty as anyone else: We’ve held an annual picture book read in for many years, but have never given nonfiction it’s proper due. Nonfiction texts were always welcome at these events, but they need their own time and place to shine. Our read-ins are a great chance to become familiar with what’s new and interesting in the publishing world, refresh your reader’s advisory skills, and a great chance for librarians and educators to connect.

Librarians: educators depend on you to have the knowledge of quality texts that support their curriculum. Educators: Librarians know how busy you are and are anxious to help you select great books. Everyone: SWON is here to help you make these connections, and have a great, fun day learning about nonfiction. Register for the Nonfiction Read-In

Nonfiction Read-In is a program for Collection Development staff, Children's Librarians, Teachers, Childcare Workers, in short, anyone who selects and/or reads books for children. We have thousands of recent titles (usually from the last two years) loaned to us for this event from local, leading, public library systems. Each attendee receives a printed listing of all of the books. 

The day includes time for selecting and binge-reading nonfiction books, discussing possible story time options with your peers and two presentations.
