The Stark County District Library is seeking an outgoing, customer service-oriented, tech-savvy professional who is passionate about the library's technology and literacy services to fill a Technology & Literacy Trainer position within its Community Services department.  While this position will be based out of the Main Library location, it will serve as a system-wide resource for our branches across the district, ensuring our patrons and staff are well-informed about technology and literacy concepts, tools, and trends.



Successful candidates will have prior experience providing individual and group training as well as proven knowledge of and experience with various technologies, especially those critical to the operations of the Library and needs of its patrons.  A strong interest in learning more and teaching others about early childhood literacy, particularly with respect to connections with technology, is also important. The Technology & Literacy Trainer is a full-time (40 hours/week), non-exempt, senior professional position, reporting to the Community Services Director.  In addition to the salary as noted above, compensation will include a competitive benefits package.

Position Description

An employee serving in this position advances the mission of the Library by performing internal and external training related to technology (approximately 80%) and early literacy (approximately 20%) across the system. Work is performed independently in accordance with general policies and accepted professional library practices. This employee operates out of the Community Services department and works closely with the department staff members, with whom he or she collaborates to discuss plans, problems, and available resources. Performance is evaluated on the basis of results achieved.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
*        Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity;
*        Demonstrates commitment to STAR (Service, Teamwork, Adaptability, Respect) values in all interactions with customers, community residents, and colleagues  and represents the library in a courteous, effective and professional manner;
*        Assists with the planning and development of public technology-related training classes and resources;
*        Facilitates computer/technology-related workshops and classes for the public and library staff;
*        Assists with the planning and development of literacy-related training classes and resources for the public and library staff;
*        Facilitates literacy-related workshops and classes for the public and library staff;
*        Coordinates with the Community Services team (Director, Technology Training Coordinator, Literacy Manager, etc.) and HR to ensure that all library staff are adequately trained on technology and literacy-related topics critical to the functioning of the library and advancement of its goals;
*        Maintains support records relating to staff training sessions and public classes;
*        Maintains schedule/booking/delivery for staff use of Library training equipment, including laptops and projectors;
*        Serves on system-wide committees as requested and available;
*        Represents the library in the community by making presentations, attending community meetings, serving on community boards or task forces;
*        Contributes content to the library's web site and various library publications, including informational columns and articles as requested;
*        Seeks information from users and potential users of information and library materials about their library needs and interests;
*        Actively seeks opportunities to promote the Library with the goal of increasing public use of programs and resources, and enhancing the Library's visibility as a vital community partner;
*        Explains use of library facilities, resources, equipment, and services as it relates to technology equipment and training;
*        Interprets library policies, objectives, and procedures as it relates to technology equipment and training;
*        Maintains an awareness of current library, literacy, and technology trends through professional development opportunities such as journals, workshops, course work, and in-house training;
*        Participates in library and professionally related organizations and attends workshops and conventions when possible;
*        Cooperates, communicates, and adds value to the team environment;
*        Operates in a self-motivated manner and maintains proficiency in current tech trends such as maker spaces, hobbies, computers, and educational applications for youths;
*        Demonstrates a willingness to evolve and adapt as training requirements and customer needs change;
*        This position may require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending on the work location, assignment or shift.

Selection Factors


Knowledge of:

  *   Customer service principles and techniques;
  *   Computer operating systems - Windows, Apple OSx, Android and Linux;
  *   Microsoft Office Suite products;
  *   Mobile devices and e-readers;
  *   Early literacy skills, or demonstrates the ability to learn such skills;
  *   The Library's early literacy resources and SPARK;
  *   Early childhood digital literacy and developmentally appropriate methods to use digital media with children;
  *   Principles and practices of adult learning theory and training;
  *   Learning types/modes and methods to adapt to various learning styles and level of student knowledge;
  *   Basic library reference resources;
  *   Library circulation system and procedures;
  *   Professional library theories, issues and trends, especially as they relate to technology and literacy;
  *   Principles and practices of public library operations and library technology;
  *   Specific subject field or type of library material;
  *   Computerized cataloging, bibliographical and circulation system databases; all digital library collections
  *   Library professional publications and the literature of librarianship as it relates to technology, literacy and training.

Ability to:

*        Demonstrate technology proficiency at the advanced level;

  *   Maintain regular and reliable attendance, observing a flexible schedule including nights and weekends as assigned;
  *   Communicate in the English language by phone, email, online or in person in a one-to-one or group setting;

  *   Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation, which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting;

Additional Requirements:

Individuals must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.



Minimum Qualifications

A Master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution is preferred; however, other equivalent combinations of education, knowledge and demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this job may be substituted and will be considered.  Proven experience working with a broad range of current technology (systems and devices) and supporting/training users is required.  Familiarity with basic literacy concepts is strongly preferred.



Physical Requirements

*        The library environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations;

*        Lift light objects (less than 20 pounds) and carry them short distances (20 feet or less);

*        Reach overhead and bend/kneel to shelve books weighing up to three pounds;

*        Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time while performing a variety of tasks; and

*        Perform repetitive hand, arm, and body movements, including lifting books on a continuous basis for up to an eight-hour shift.

Stark County District Library serves over 105,000 active cardholders, annually circulating 3.85 million items from its 1.4 million item collection and providing access to an additional 66 million items from lending networks throughout Ohio.  Each year the library presents more than 9,000 programs for 170,000 attendees and provides 260,000 computer sessions on the publicly available computers found in each branch.  The system consists of ten branches, including our main library, as well as a mobile services department.
