The Stark County District Library is seeking an experienced library professional to fill a Library Materials Selector position within our Collection Development department. Successful candidates will be self-directed, demonstrate strong critical thinking skills, and have in-depth knowledge of library procedures and collection management resources.  Previous experience in materials selection is a plus and, given the nature of this role, candidates should have a passion for books and reading.



The Library Materials Selector is a full-time (40 hours/week), exempt, senior professional position, reporting to the Library Collections Director.  Compensation includes a salary commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and a competitive benefits package.

Detailed Position Description
The purpose of this specific Coordinator-level position within the Collection Development department is to select and acquire library materials for the library system, specifically materials for adults across ten (10) locations. This responsibility involves the identification of popular materials in physical and digital formats including fiction, audiobooks, and large print. The Selector practices evidence-based selection and is available for consultation regarding collections for adults district-wide.  An awareness of current and forthcoming titles, literature, and popular culture is essential.  This role has considerable latitude in the application of professional practices, and may be consulted to advise and resolve difficult or unusual problems in the assigned area of responsibility. The position is accountable to a library director, with whom he or she collaborates, plans and reviews plans, budgets, programs, reports and conferences.  The ideal candidate is responsible for modeling outstanding customer service to both internal and external customers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  *   Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency and fiscally responsible activity;
  *   Selects and orders library materials in assigned areas - print, media, and e-resources in English and other languages.
  *   Oversees Patron Request for Purchase service, demand purchasing programs and patron driven acquisition programs.
  *   Selects and orders library materials in assigned areas - print, media, and e-resources in English and other languages.
  *   Reads reviews and conducts research to determine collection needs and support selection duties.
  *   Reviews and maintains familiarity with publishing trends, "hot" titles, current and popular topics and trends, and other relevant information as appropriate to support selection.
  *   Reviews titles being reserved, usage and reserve statistics, and customer requests to determine collection needs.
  *   Expends funds systematically and in a fiscally-responsible manner
  *   Addresses and resolves intellectual freedom issues as they arise.
  *   Serves as liaison with publishers, vendors and self-published authors or creators.
  *   Collaborates with public service managers to use location specific demographic information and collection statistics to determine selection priorities and special needs.
  *   Communicates and collaborates regularly with the branches, library administration and contracted vendors.
  *   Participates in staff meetings and collaborates Library Collections Director on a regular basis.
  *   Interprets and explains library policies, objectives, and services to community groups, business and educational leaders, vendors, and the general public.
  *   Represents the library to agencies, organizations and the community and promotes library services in a positive and professional manner.
  *   Resolves customer problems.
  *   Assists in training of staff.  Drives to branches to conduct training and consult with branch staff regarding collection needs as necessary.
  *   Compiles and reports required statistics.  Writes reports and memos.
  *   May complete other duties as assigned.
  *   Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  *   Works more than forty hours in a workweek without additional compensation to perform assigned job duties.

Selection Factors
Knowledge of:

  *   Library-related databases, ILS (knowledge of Sierra, a plus) and ordering systems and some experience working with them

  *   Demonstrate technology proficiency at the intermediate level, especially a fluency with Microsoft Office Suite products
  *   Comprehend, use and apply current technology in a public library setting
  *   Demonstrate a high comfort level with budget and collection analysis
  *   Analyze professional problems and take appropriate action
  *   Adapt to changing work priorities, manage time and prioritize well, and generally demonstrate adaptability and flexibility with respect to handling multiple projects and tasks
  *   Communicate effectively and work proactively to attain solutions, doing so with tact and diplomacy
  *   Work cooperatively with other employees and the general public
  *   Comprehend and make inferences from written material
  *   Keep up-to-date with current professional issues and developments in the functional area of responsibility
  *   Demonstrate general detail-orientation with respect to work products
  *   Produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar
  *   Maintain regular and reliable attendance, observing a flexible schedule including nights and weekends as assigned
  *   Communicate in the English language by phone or in person in a one-to-one or group setting

Minimum Qualifications

*        A Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution.

*        Five (5) years of experience in collection development is a plus.

*        Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Additional Requirements

  *   This position requires travel to branches. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
  *   May require the performance of other essential and marginal functions, depending on work location, assignment or shift.


Physical Requirements

*        A selector spends approximately 90-95% of one's work day seated in front of a computer. This position will be required to travel to all branch locations throughout Stark County.

*        The library environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.

*        Lift light objects (less than 20 pounds) and carry them short distances (20 feet or less)

*        Perform repetitive hand, arm, and body movements, which may include typing, lifting books, etc. on a continuous basis for up to an eight-hour shift.

Stark County District Library serves over 105,000 active cardholders, annually circulating 3.85 million items from its 1.4 million item collection and providing access to an additional 66 million items from lending networks throughout Ohio.  Each year the library presents more than 9,000 programs for 170,000 attendees and provides 260,000 computer sessions on the publicly available computers found in each branch.  The system consists of ten branches, including our main library, as well as a mobile services department.
