Due to an upcoming retirement, the Wayne County Public Library is seeking candidates for Children’s Services Manager at the Main Library located in Wooster, Ohio.

Supervises:                         Children’s Services Department



QUALIFICATIONS:

MLS/MLIS degree from an accredited institution with at least two of the following: 1) coursework in youth services, 2) three years of experience working with children in a professional setting, 3) three years of experience working in a public library, or 4) three years of experience managing people; Acceptable results on a criminal and educational background check and must comply with drug-free workplace policies; A valid Ohio driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.



REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  *   Solid knowledge of children’s literature, library materials, programs, services, and current trends in library services for children, tweens and adults who work with children and tweens.
  *   Excellent knowledge of social media and emerging technologies, including digital formats.
  *   Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  *   High level of comfort with computers including Microsoft Office and related applications.
  *   Ability to coach, train, and mentor staff.
  *   Experience in the successful management and leadership of a team.
  *   Ability to plan and conduct programs for library patrons.
  *   Broad cultural literacy and knowledge of current events and issues within the community.
  *   Ability to present Wayne County Public Library in a positive manner at all times.
  *   Ability to work efficiently, independently and make sound decisions.
  *   Polite, attentive, flexible, team oriented, and exuberant customer service to other departments and the public.
  *   Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  *   Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Children’s Services Manager works closely with the Library’s Administrative Team in providing creative and innovative approaches to library services to children and families. Duties include but are not limited to the following:



Administration:

  *   Oversees the main library’s Children’s Department; serves as a resource for branch children’s services operations.
  *   Interviews, selects, schedules, trains, mentors, and evaluates staff; delegates responsibilities appropriately.
  *   Plans and administers the Children’s Department budget; Identifies outside sources of funding and writes effective grant applications related to children’s materials and services.
  *   Represents the Library and services to children in the community; Develops cooperative relationships, forges partnerships, and actively networks in the community.
  *   Manages and evaluates services, recommends policies, establishes departmental goals, plans improvements, and delegates duties based upon the Library’s strategic plan, current resources, and community needs.
  *   Provides input to the Library’s management team regarding youth services and advocates for a child’s right to access library materials and services.



Collection Development and Programming:

  *   Maintains a working knowledge of the Children’s Department collection; coordinates the Children’s Department collection development efforts; collects data and compiles reports, as needed; coordinates creative displays to merchandise the children’s collections and resources.
  *   Plans and directs children’s programming, on and off site, in conjunction with administrative goals and objectives, sound child development principles, current educational practices, emerging technologies, and popular youth trends.
  *   Establishes programs and services for parents, individuals, agencies, and other professionals who work with children in the community.
  *   Coordinates the publicity of programs and services.
  *   Evaluates programs and submits reports, as needed.

Other Duties:

  *   Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to the public.
  *   Acts as a “Person In Charge” of the Main Library and provides assistance and direction to staff and patrons as required.  Addresses safety and security concerns for staff and library patrons.
  *   Participates in and assists with staff development activities including workshops, committees, meetings and continuing education classes.
  *   Participates in activities of professional and related organizations.
  *   May work in other units within the department or library as needed.
  *   Performs additional duties as assigned.

HIRING RANGE:   $40,000 - $50,000
