[OPLINLIST] memorials

I think book plates are a good approach.  If they are looking specifically at donations at the time of a funeral (in place of flowers, for instance), one library I used to work at created a simple wooden wall hanging that hung near the front desk with small metal plaques attached that acknowledged donations in memory of someone who is deceased.  I also think it's important that there is a clear policy that when the library is accepting a donation that the library is not promising the keep the material or other memorial acknowledgements forever.  Below is the policy from that library, the last paragraph has a couple of sentences that covers the memorial plaques I mentioned.

Have a good day

Joe

Donation Policy

The
library welcomes citizens and organizations to support its services through
contributions of materials for library collections, gifts that will enhance the
library’s physical environment, and bequests, trusts, or donations of monetary
or other assets for library purposes. Materials and equipment given to and
accepted by the library, shall become the sole property of the library to be
managed as the director or his or her designee deems appropriate. The library
is unable to furnish appraisals of donated items, and reserves the right to
refuse any donation.

The
library may accept gifts of miscellaneous books or other materials with the
understanding that items not added to the library’s collection will be disposed
of at the discretion of the library.

Patrons or
organizations who wish to donate gifts of a more specific nature, such as works
of art, furniture, equipment, special collections, and real property, shall be
referred to the director who, in consultation with the board of trustees, will
determine whether or how to accept such a gift. If a patron or organization
wishes to donate funds for specific purposes, the amount and nature of the
expenditure must be approved by the board before the gift is accepted.  Items so purchased become the property of the
library and may be disposed of accordingly.

The
library will acknowledge most monetary gifts with a written response to the
donor, thanking them for their generosity.  Donations made as part of a funerary memorial or bequest will be
acknowledged on a plaque that will hang in the library, stating the name of the
deceased and their dates of birth and death.  Donations acknowledged in this manner will remain in the library for as
long as space permits.  Especially large
bequests may be acknowledged in their own right at the discretion of the
board.

Stacey, regarding memorials, here's a great article about how one library learned to handle this issue and created a good service for the familes and community.

After several retirements, we are trying to update our very dated memorial process/procedure.  Can anyone share how your library handles patrons that would like to give monies in memory of loved ones?
