Local History Librarian
Dayton Metro Library

The Dayton Metro Library is seeking a full-time Local History Librarian to join our Special Collections team at the Main Library. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about the history of the Dayton area and be able to collaborate easily with the Archivist to organize and digitize the collection. The successful applicant will work with a cohesive, customer service-focused team whose priority is to promote Dayton Metro Library's unique collections and assist patrons in utilizing them. Essential Job Duties

*         Plans, prepares and conducts system-wide local history related programs that offer a tie-in to library materials. Participates in public relations activities such as tours, talks and demonstrations to promote library use.

*         Provides services and supports community local historical organizations. Represents DML and promotes library services while attending local history related community meetings. Develops proposals and executes contractual agreements for local history related library services. Preselects for Collection Development and deselects at Main in assigned subject areas.

*         Administers the Local History Collection, serving as a region-wide resource promoting collection resources and services. Selects and deselects materials for the collection using subject background knowledge, knowledge of the collection and awareness of patron needs. Develops and implements digitization planning and programs.

*         Coordinates planning and implementation of digitization projects in collaboration with department staff, setting priorities and adhering to recognized standards.  Acts as a resource and provides assistance to DML staff in the provision of local history services or programs.

*         Develops and delivers local history and digital assets management related training courses/workshops to DML staff.

*         Provides library users with assistance in reference, readers' advisory, information literacy and instruction in the use of library materials and reference resources. Serves at the Ask Me Desk and in a roaming capacity.

*         Submits required reports and budget requests. Serves on library committees. Attends applicable department meetings. Assists with system-wide programs, activities and initiatives.

Job Qualifications

  *   Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (preferred) or its equivalent in education and experience is required.
  *   Valid Ohio driver's license, acceptable motor vehicle record, and continuous insurability required.
  *   Knowledge of Dayton, Ohio and surrounding communities.
  *   Knowledge of professional library principles, methods, techniques and procedures.  Knowledge and appreciation of literature, periodicals, websites and other electronic media, and materials which constitute a diverse, current and relevant local history collection.
  *   Ability to determine patron information needs.  Ability to construct a competent and complete search strategy using both print and non-print information resources.

*         Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.  Ability to apply active listening skills.

*         Ability to deal effectively with confrontational individuals and/or challenging situations.

  *   Schedule includes day, evening and Saturday hours.

Compensation and Benefits:  This full-time position is subject to a partial furlough under the Shared Work Ohio Program at a rate of $21.98 per hour ($24.62 per hour with an MLIS degree or equivalent).  A full benefit package is offered that includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as paid time off.
