Library staff are uniquely positioned to positively impact teens as they grow into adults. By listening to teens and by creating opportunities aligned to their developmental needs and interests, we can create transformative, truly teen-centered library services. By offering connected learning and computational thinking opportunities to our teens, we can help them build skills that will prepare them for their futures.

Transforming Teen Services is a nationwide initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association. Transforming Teen Services aims to support and elevate teen services in libraries and other learning environments by integrating connected learning, computational thinking, and youth development to help build responsive services for and with teens.

Participate in this interactive 6-hour course presented through a series of Webex meetings. This is a FREE course, supported by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.

The early spring section of Transforming Teen Services: An Online Course will take place Mondays from 2:30-4:00 pm, April 26 and May 3, 10, and 17.

Space is limited. Please register at your earliest convenience.

Schedule:

All sessions are 90 minutes long

1. Introduction / Ages and Stages

  * Meet the facilitators and attendees, learn about Transforming Teen Services, and explore youth development and how to create program environments and activities to meet young peoples' developmental needs.
2. Connected Learning

  * Connected Learning (CL) encourages curiosity, exploration of interests, relationship-building, and teen participation in creating learning opportunities. Explore how to use teens' interests to create programs and services that engage and empower teens.
3. Computational Thinking

  * Computational Thinking (CT) is a way of thinking critically and solving problems by applying logical concepts. From coding to cooking, many everyday skills, hobbies, and occupational pursuits all involve CT. Explore how to help teens face challenges and solve problems by building CT literacy.
4. Bringing It All Together

  * Wrap up your Transforming Teen Services experience with a review of all the major topics, an opportunity to look at actual library programs and services through a CL and CT lens, and a conversation about Youth Voice. Explore opportunities to dive deeper and learn more about CL and CT, or just take the knowledge you have gained and run with it!

Time requirement:

This course is 6 contact hours plus brief self-paced assignments to prepare for each session. A certificate documenting 6 hours of continuing education will be available.

Technology requirements:

Internet, microphone, speakers, and camera. We understand that some library workers may not have access to a webcam/device camera or choose not to use one. In order to provide an engaging interpersonal environment and ensure that all attendees can participate fully, we ask that attendees use a camera during these sessions. If this is not possible, we will work with you. Please contact us with any concerns.

"These trainings are everything I wish I had had when I started working in teen services...They are helping us to build a sense of community among practitioners in our state. It's been absolutely amazing to get to interact with these awesome people, to hear to the really cool things they are doing, to start this conversation. It feels like we are part of something bigger, and we are part of it together."
