Introduction

Library Collections: New Tools for Auditing and Updating Policies

Library collections are always evolving as titles are added and weeded to suit the needs of the community, keep information updated, and provide access to new stories and experiences. The State Library of Ohio recently introduced a new tool called the Ohio Collections Analysis Initiative<https://library.ohio.gov/services-for-libraries/library-programs-development/ohio-collection-analysis-initiative/> that can help staff from all types of libraries analyze book displays, lists, and parts of the physical collection for children and teens. This powerful tool provides data on the diversity of a collection based on a variety of factors like racial diversity, cultural experience, reading level, neurodiversity, recency etc. Register here<https://library.ohio.gov/services-for-libraries/library-programs-development/ohio-collection-analysis-initiative/> for the new tool and view informational webinars here<https://library.ohio.gov/services-for-libraries/library-programs-development/ohio-collection-analysis-initiative/#Webinars>.
Along with analyzing collections and displays, it is also a good time to evaluate collection development policies and procedures. Book challenges in public libraries and schools are happening both nationally and in Ohio. There are lots of resources to help evaluate existing policies to be effective in the current climate. The National Coalition on Censorship has resources on reviewing and strengthening<https://ncac.org/news/blog/guidelines-school-officials> library policies.
